Inexpensive beginner film SLR?
I’m taking an Intro to Photography class and we need a 35mm camera with manual f-stop and shutter speed. My budget is $150~$200, hopefully.
The cameras I’m considering right now are Pentax MX/K1000 or the Canon A-1. A friend suggested that I also look into Yashica and Mamiya, but I have no idea which of their 35mm lines I should consider.
Which of those would be good for a beginner film SLR?
This might be a long-shot, but are there any inexpensive Canon film SLRs whose lenses are interchangeable with DSLRs? I currently have an XTi, and if possible, I’d like to save money on lenses. Otherwise, I’ll stick with Tamrons, I guess. :/
I would definitely look at older Yashica and Mamiya sets. Check out Ebay – there are a ton of people converting from film to digital, and they’re letting some really nice old stuff go for a song. To say that those names aren’t reputable is crazy-talk. A friend and shooting partner of mine has been using the same FX-3 for 30 years now.
As far as lenses are concerned, you’re not going to have much luck with buying anything that’s readily usable with your XTI. The new Canon EOS system does away with manual control of the aperture, so your teacher will most likely frown on you using anything of the sort.
Personally, I’d search Ebay or any of the numerous online retailers for a used Nikon FM. I see quite a few go with 50mm lenses for $75-$200 on ebay on a regular basis. Odds are, you’ll be using a 50mm lens in your intro class.
In the end, if you end up not liking film photography (which I doubt), you’ll be able to sell the Nikon setup for what you paid. If you decide to stick with it, you’ll be able to get plenty of use out of the Nikon line – they haven’t changed their lens mount in 30 years.
