Xd Camera Card
What xD Card Users Need To Know
Buying the right digital camera is a personal dilemma especially when there are so many good brands to choose from. The model and specs also add to the problem as everyone seems fine and exceeds one another. But if there is one thing not to be left unconsidered in your purchase of a digital camera or even digital voice recorder, it is the memory storage medium, often in memory card format. There are a lots of brands competing to complement digital devices from cameras to cellphones to music players, but the question often lie not on the brand but on the type of card to buy. Which one is a dead end?
xD card, a type of memory card specifically made for picture storage may have been an advantageous choice for tech savvies but that is only until the manufacturing came to a complete halt. Its counterparts, the SD and SDHC continues to gain support from electronic giants which is the opposite for xD. Exclusively manufactured by Samsung Electronics and Toshiba Corporation for Olympus and Fujifilm, this card has reached its end that as of 2010, this model is already considered an obsolete. It was also announced by the original clients that no cameras using this type of memory card will be produced any longer. Is this the end for those with existing camera models relying to such flash memory card?
Fortunately, you can still use your camera a little longer. Although the manufacturing companies have already announced this model is now phased out, you can still purchase it from the brands that originally included it on their packages. Olympus xD cards for instance are still available on most stores across the country. However, as early as 2008, the availability of memory capacity of this picture card has already been pinned to a mere 1 GB and 2 GB.
Using your Olympus xD cards alongside other electronic devices such as computers should not be a problem. Although card reader models are now moving away from the xD card format, there are still some multicard readers that can cater to your needs. If you have a spare money now, better buy an alternative one as you may find yourself running to stores without a successful purchase in the near future. The availability of both card and card reader are predicted to be stable within the next few years, given that the sale statistics for this model will not change. Theoretically speaking, consumers with existing xD-Picture card using-devices may cram and save some for themselves. There is no chance of reproduction in the near future as well.
With the picture quality this flash memory card could offer, why did it come to its end then? One main reason is the exclusive distribution that only caters to two brands. Most of the top-selling brands use SD cards as well which makes it impractical to use a different model for the smaller brands. The capacity is also not that impressive especially that they are used to store photos with large file sizes.
Whether some consumers deem it as a loss, manufacturers will not resume and client electronic brands have already started making SD enabled products. So if you are a user, better start buying reserves or get a new camera instead.
