A few questions about the best way to transfer old photos to CD?

I have 200-300 photos I want to scan, but no scanner. I was told that Wolf Camera stores would transfer your photos to cd for you, but I wasn’t able to find a price on the website. Considering the quantity, wouldn’t it be more cost efficient to just BUY a scanner? If so, where should I buy it? What brand? What specifications should I look for? (Note that after these few hundred photos are scanned, I will have no need for it and probably sell it to a pawn shop.) Also, is it legal for places like Wolf camera to scan professional portrait studio photos if they are very old? (Example: I’m 30, and I’d like to scan my Senior Pictures that were taken in the studio.)
Any helpful hints appreciated!
I have no idea what iphoto is.

Depends a lot on the price for scanning photos professionally, but it is usually expensive. You can get very good scanners for less that $200 and good ones for under $100. I don’t think you would get professional scanning of your photos for that price. Do you have a digital camera? Then don’t bother about scanning, get yourself a tripod and photograph your pictures at the highest resolution and lowest ISO (80 or 100). Is almost as good as scanning but much faster (and cheaper if you have a camera already).

There is no problem with scanning or photographing things as long as the original is in your possession and you do this for private purposes only. If you are allowed to make a copy of a CD you own, for yourself, then by all means this applies to your photos, too.
