I still don’t know what to get my dad for father’s day??

I’ve been thinking for weeks and I’ve come up with nothing. He’s not a “typical guy” — he doesn’t like power tools, sports, etc. He likes technology and scuba diving. However, he already has everything! He has a gps, an iPod, two iPod speaker things, more than enough TVs, all of the scuba gear ever invented… I thought about getting him a Keurig coffee maker, but it seems a bit silly since he’s never in a rush and has plenty of time to make coffee the old-fashioned way. He only watches movies once, so there’s no point in buying him one, and he doesn’t listen to CD’s. He has a digital picture frame and an underwater camera. I’m not even going to be here on Sunday (6 week summer program) and we’re already going out to dinner Saturday night so I can’t really cook for him. He’s never used anything that I’ve gotten him and I really want to find something he can USE this year. Please, please help me! I’m only 16 so I have a bit of a budget, but I can go up to around $150.

a portable GPS thing so he can tell where he is on the planet, and where you are too!

The Right Gear and Tips for Snorkeling

Have you ever been snorkeling?  It’s a very relaxing activity and easy to learn.  Most tropical resorts have a tour guide or instructor that will teach you all you need to know for an afternoon of snorkeling.

It all starts with 3 major pieces of equipment.  First, you should have a scuba mask that fits properly.  If you have a poorly fitting mask, it may leak or be very uncomfortable while snorkeling.

Second, it’s a good idea to have a proper fitting pair of fins.  Swim fins help you travel effortlessly through the water.  There are many different styles of fins that completely change how a person swims.

Lastly, there is the snorkel.  This is usually a simple plastic tube, either L- or J- shaped and fitted with a mouthpiece at the bottom end that is made of rubber or plastic.  The typical length of the tube is about 30 centimeters with an inside diameter of 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters.  The tube is used for breathing air from above the water’s surface while the wearer’s mouth and nose are submerged.  This simple tube is allowed to flood when underwater.  The snorkeler expels the water from the snorkel with a sharp exhale or by tilting the head backwards before reaching the surface.  The snorkeler continues exhaling until he reaches the surface; then faces forward again before inhaling the next breath.  This process is known as the displacement method; an advanced technique that takes practice, but clears the snorkel efficiently.

Some Helpful Tips for Snorkelers

  1. Work with a sporting shop specialist to get the proper fitting mask and fins.
  2. When snorkeling, only use your legs to guide you through the water.
  3. Leave your arms at your side, and against your body.
  4. Kick your feet properly and keep them below the water’s surface while swimming.
  5. Swim naturally and perform small, smooth kicks.
  6. Stay calm and relaxed while snorkeling to avoid making mistakes.
  7. Always snorkel with a buddy.
  8. To prevent sunburn, wear a T-shirt or use sun block, if you plan on snorkeling for several hours.
  9. Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration, which can lead to cramps.
  10. Avoid touching delicate coral reefs. You may wish to wear protective gloves if you plan on snorkeling around rocky outcroppings.
  11. Be aware of your surroundings.  Do not take unnecessary risks around any sea life that you are not familiar with.  Some species are poisonous.
  12. You may wish to bring along an inexpensive, underwater camera to record your underwater adventure to share with family and friends.

Snorkeling is a popular activity.  Snorkelers can swim in warm, tropical waters where they observe the underwater world in its natural environment only several feet below the water’s surface, and without heavy scuba gear equipment. Try snorkeling as a new hobby or while on vacation in a tropical paradise, and experience life in another dimension.
