Carrying EOS XTi on a bike ride?

Hello,
A few months ago I bought an Canon EOS XTi and a 17-58 2.8 lens. I am starting to get more enjoyment out of the camera and trying to bring it with me along more often.

I want to take my bike out for a ride today. But I would also like to take my camera along with me in case I see something I wish to photograph.

My problem is how I should carry this camera? I plan on riding for about 2-3 hours, mainly on paved surfaces since I can’t think of any trails in the area.

My primary camera case is a Crumpler 6 million dollar home. the crumpler is designed for cameras with padding in it, but the only problem is that it’s a shoulder strap bag. I wonder how difficult this would be to have when riding.

I do also have a regular backpack that i mainly use for going to the gym, I was thinking that I could use this and maybe wrap the camera up in a towel and put it in the backpack.

How would you carry this camera on a bike ride?

Backpacks are what a lot of us use. While hiking and biking, I keep the backpack on my back and one camera around my neck, ready to shoot at a moments notice.
