Which DSLR camera should I get ? Sony Alpha 500 or Olympus E620?

The other day I asked a similar question, but with Canon as well. I eliminated Canon and have narrowed my search down to these two. Please do not send dpreview links because I have already used that site as well as some others for comparison.

In my opinion the Sony A500 is the better choice. It has in-camera image stabilization and a focus motor. You can use every legacy Minolta Maxxum AF lens made since 1985 on it so your lens selection is large. Plus you have access to the third-party (Vivitar, Tamron, Sigma, Tokina) lens makers who also offered lenses for the Maxxum.

The E-620 is a good camera but its still a 4/3 format which means a smaller sensor and a smaller selection of lenses.

My vote goes to the A500.

Is 3D Imaging and GPS Enough Reason to Get the Sony TX100V?

The new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX100V gives a very pleasing visual impression with its compact dimensions of about 97 x 59 x 18 millimeters. But behind the sleek case are the most advanced features being housed. The device can hold not only 16.2-megapixel photos, full HD video and three-dimensional panoramic images, it also has a built-in GPS receiver and a compass so you can travel with all locations geotagged.

Improved Display

In terms of features, this new high-end model of the Sony Cyber-shot series leaves the demanding photographers little to be desired. The 3.5 inch OLED touch screen of the device, for example, is much larger than most conventional compact cameras, while its extremely high resolution of 1.22976 million pixels dwarfs many existing cameras like the Nikon D3100 (only 230,000 pixels) or the Sony Alpha 230 (only 230,400 pixels).

Image Quality and 3D

Another cool feature is the high-quality 4x optical zoom lens of the camera, which is made by the optical specialist Carl Zeiss especially for Sony. The image-stabilizing lens offers an extremely short initial focal length of 25 millimeters – sufficiently wide-angled that approaches fisheye lense capability. The camera can also take 3D photos, which can be previewed by tilting it back and forth. The minimum focal limit of only 1 centimeter, on the other hand, is ideal for macro shots.

Image Resolution Issues and Cost

The resolution of 16.1 megapixels, however, given the relatively small 1/2, 3 inch CMOS chips, is not justified because it does not benefit from its light sensitivity. The manufacturer assures, however, that the Exmor-R technology suppresses potential image noise very well. A battery pack in turn should be enough for up to 220 shots or 110 minutes uninterrupted work. For a compact camera, this is a very decent value.

If everything the manufacturer promises is true, the camera is an excellent tool for demanding users. It was released just a few days ago and is quite pricey – just a little over 350 dollars. By comparison, the entry-level Sony A230 DSLR including the kit lens SAL-1855 costs just as much.

User Reviews

Nevertheless, the camera got rave reviews at the annual CES (Consumer Electronics Show) exhibit in Las Vegas. Visit the Sony TX100V review page to find out why.
