Question regarding flash unit for sony A350?

i recently bought a Speedlight YN460 (yongnuo digital – manufacturer) for my sony A350.
unbeknown to me it came with a hot shoe adapter, which i was told to avoid, but i really cant be arsed with sending it back since it came from China! and hence why it was cheap (=

im relatively new to photography (just under a year) and self taught all the way, anywhos, basically i keep having a problem when taking photos, ive pretty much worked out that it flashes when i push the button so overall im happy, however the pop-up flash built in on the camera keeps flashing too – does anyone know how to avoid this problem so that just the flash unit flashes?

ps i dont want to just hold the pop up flash down, like someone said, since this if forcing against the mechanism – which on several hundred pounds worth of equipment would be extremely annoying if it broke it.

thanks (=

Take the camera off green box auto and the built in flash will not pop up every time you try to use the camera. Put the mode dial on P and it is still pretty much the same, only you have more control over the camera. You don’t have to use that control if you don’t want to, and everything will keep on working the same way it is now. Holding the flash down could damage the mechanism, so that is not a good solution to the problem.

Sony is the only brand I have ever seen that will even allow the built in flash to come up if there is something in the hot shoe. Every other brand has an interlock device that keeps it down. I have used that to my advantage though, using the pop-up as a fill with a radio trigger in the shoe firing larger flashes through umbrellas.
