what is the difference between a DSLR and an EVIL camera?

i need the positives and negatives on both sides. i’m thinking about either getting a Sony NEX-3 or a Nikon D3100. what are the differences between the two? is the quality of the images different even though they’re both 14.2 MP? i feel like an EVIL camera isn’t as “good” as a DSLR quality wise. explain to me if i’m wrong.

EVIL stands for…Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens camera. These types of cameras have an image sensor that’s the same size as many dSLR cameras…so you can expect comparable (and in some cases ) better image quality or ISO capability as a dSLR (particularly entry-level).

Have a look at the link below to compare side by side image samples between two different models. If you compare ISO 800, ISO 1600 and ISO 3200 images of the NEX-3 and D3100, you will see that the NEX does actually in some cases have less noise then the D3100 and I think it actually beats the D3100 at higher ISOs.

Theses types of camera are very compact in size because they are mirrorless, which means they also lack an optical viewfinder. So, you are limited to using the LCD screen only for composing your shots. Many people are fine with this, but others (especially, advanced or dSLR) users may find this annoying. You can, however, buy an optional viewfinder for the NEX if you want.

The NEX-3 (and NEX-5…which is the better of the two because it has an all metal body, larger hand grip and can record Full HD movies) are aimed mostly at point and shooters wanting better image quality in a small package. One of the worst things I have heard about the NEX cameras is that they have a crappy and very frustrating Menu/User interface (that many advanced cameras users might find real annoying). Luckily, Sony have released a firmware update which improves a few things, including the Menu. You can download it at Sony.com

Even though I’m a dSLR user, I do need a new compact camera…so, I am seriously thinking about buying the NEX-5 because I want better high ISO/low noise capability than a regular compact and they also shoot RAW, which is good.

The main downside to the NEX cameras are their price. Also, there are only three E mount lenses available right now, but you can add on a number of A mount or third party lenses with an optional adapter. I hear that the 16mm pancake E mount lens that is offered in some NEX kits is fairly soft, so I will be avoiding it. The 18-55mm lens is fine.

Honestly, if you’re wanting to get into using a dSLR camera, you may find a dSLR better. You’ll have an optical viewfinder, faster performance and much more user friendly manual controls than the NEX. The D3100 also has the advantage of recording Full HD movies.

But, if you prefer a smaller body and composing images using the LCD screen, and you’re not too fussy about good manual control, the NEX might be the right camera for you.

It’s your choice…
