Is there a way to make my Sony HDR-UX5 record to a hard drive or SSD instead of miniature DVDs?
My Sony HDR-UX5 camcorder is pretty good, but I hate recording to the miniature DVDs it’s designed to record to because you can only fit about 15 minutes of full-quality 1080i footage on a disc, which is a waste of money and makes it hard to shoot long segments of continuous footage.
Is there a way to make this camera record to some kind of hard drive or solid state memory?
I know I saw something at a video expo where they had a drive contained in some kind of case that attached to the tripod, with the camera on top of it, but I can’t seem to find it online, and I don’t know if it would be able to work with my camera.
Can anyone help me with this?

That “drive contained in some kind of case that attached to the tripod, with the camera on top of it” you saw at the video expo was probably one of the FireStore series external drives that connect to camcorders with a DV/Firewire port. These are typically digital tape based camcorders.
Sony makes a similar external hard drive that connects using firewire, too – and it is made for theire pro-grade HVR/HDCAM/XDCAM series camcorders.
These external drives are approximately 4x more than your camcorder was when it was purchased new. Even if you could magically make it work, it would not be worth adding to that camcorder.
