what happens when you reboot your security cameras?
my friend owns a small business, and she has survailence cameras that all run to a computer in the back. About a week ago,the screen went black and is saying something about needing to reboot the system. she wasnt too worried about it until money started to go missing from the safe. If the computer screen is blank, does that mean nothing was captured on camera? and if she reboots, does all past info get erased?
There shouldn’t be anything wrong with the camera(s).
The DVR (digital video recorder) that is setup to record the input from the cameras probably just hung/froze up.
I would turn it off, disconnect it, make sure that it is clean (no dust bunnies in any fans or vent ports, etc), blow it out with some compressed air and then plug it back in and turn it on. Anything that was recorded prior to it freezing up SHOULD still be on the hard drive, unless it is specifically setup to delete it upon compromise, which is unlikely. There will not be any video from the cameras during the period of time that the system was frozen.
If for some reason the system does not reboot, and continues to malfunction, it could have overheated and fried one of the components. Depending on the type of DVR, you might call the manufacturer and see if there is anything they can help you with. Hopefully it isn’t completely dead and you won’t have to purchase a new one.
