Who has the best quality photos in a compact digital camera?
I’m looking to get a compact digi cam (doesn’t need to be THAT small as long as it can still be pocket size) but I find that more than anything there’s just no comparison to dSLR cameras photo quality. The trade-off is in the size apparently. The only possibilites I’ve found are Leica (V-Lux) and Sigma (DP-1) but they’re way out of my price range at $800 +, my ceiling is about $400 (and it sucks to think I can get a mid size dSLR in that range…)
Is there a happy medium? I don’t need all the bells and whistles that get touted by every digi cam, just crisp, sharp, photo quality in pocket size. I’ve been looking at Panasonic and Cannon mostly, but even they have photo quality issues especially in low lighting/high ISO situations.
Would really appreciate some guidance if anybody has experience with photography.
PS: An optical viewfinder would be nice, but that would probably just be too perfect.
Some pretty compact cameras that have well above average quality for their size are the Canon S95 and the Panasonic LX5. Their 10 MP sensors, although much smaller than a DSLR’s are a bit bigger than most compacts. Their optical zoom ranges are not very great. That, however, enables them to be compact and have very good image quality.
Here are some reviews:

The Canon SD4500 IS is a notch below those models in image quality, but it is compact, above average, and has more optical zoom on the telephoto side.

Panasonic Lumix Digital Cameras – Avoid The 3 Main Disadvantages
Digital Cameras are great and I believe everyone should own one. The advantages of having a digital camera are numerous. Odds are, you probably already own one or maybe you are on your 2nd or 3rd. They are very convenient, extremely portable (great for traveling and packing in a suitcase), most take good photographs but, they are not without their disadvantages either. Unless, you are aware of the 3 Most Common Disadvantages, and which brands rank much higher with professionals and consumers, your next digital camera purchase might leave you disappointed. All cameras are not of equal quality.

Problems With Low Light
As long as you are aware of these 3 main problems with digital cameras and which one’s have the best ratings and reviews in these areas, you will be a well – armed shopper. I personally, am tired of spending my money on something that sounded great and will “solve” whatever problem, we are having, only to get it home and find out it was mostly good advertising and hype. It really does pay to do your research ahead of time.
In doing my research for this article, I discovered that Panasonic Lumix Digital came out on top in 2 critical areas. They have won The Most Reliable Camera Manufacturer Award for several years and again just recently. This is a separate category ( and an added bonus), from the 3 Most common Disadvantages. This category tells you and me, that you can rely on your Panasonic to have fewer mechanical problems on a consistent basis than some other brands.
I’m sure you know how frustrating it can be to be ready to take great picture and something goes wrong with your camera. An opportunity lost. Panasonic also has 1 of my best in category cameras without the 3 main disadvantages, the Panasonic Lumix LX 5. This is easily still one of the most popular cameras around. It Ranks #2 out of 89 in a current review in “Dave’s Picks” on Imaging Resource. It will also take care of the Low Light problem for you. It does very well in low light so, there is one problem eliminated. Panasonic also has Leica Lenses that are considered some of the best Lenses in the world.
The Canon SX30 IS is, another superb digital camera. It’s popularity is growing by leaps and bounds. It has Stereo Sound and Canon is known to excel with their Super Zoom. Both of these cameras are excellent choices and will greatly help to eliminate the 3 Main Digital Camera Disadvantages.
