Can you use regular alkaline batteries in a digital camera meant for a li-ion battery?

I don’t even know for sure what a li-ion batt looks like and if regular AA or whatever would fit in the slot. I am going to a region of the world with no electricity and don’t know how to keep my camera going. I am looking to buy the Panasonic lumix tz3. Any suggestions for any top end point and shoot cameras that take regular batteries?
It is a battery pack. I don’t think they use individual batteriws in the camera i’m looking at.

No, of course you can’t use AA size batteries in a camera which uses a Li-ion battery!
And you should NEVER use regular alkaline batteries, anyway…as they do not have enough power to run a digital camera for long at all.

If you’re going to a part of the world which doesn’t have electricity, then the only sensible and realistic choice of camera to use…is one than uses AA size batteries (and that does not include the TZ3). Not to worry, because there are better cameras available, anyway.

Your best choice of battery would be non rechargeable AA Lithium, such as Energizer e2. These batteries are long lasting (up to 600 shots) and have an extremely long shelf life. They’re fairly expensive, but would be the best option in your case…and you could literally take as many as you want to carry.

Some very good cameras with a 10x or 12x optical zoom lens, to consider (that use AA batteries) are…
The new Canon S5 IS
Canon S3 IS
Sony H2
Sony H5

good luck…

Olympus June 30 event to unveil E-PM1, E-PL3, E-P3 cameras
Olympus has quietly sent out invitations to a special event in Taiwan on June 30 that should bring out three new cameras. Along with the E-PM1, the camera builder is expected to introduce the E-PL3, a replacement for the E-PL2 that would add a tilting LCD, as well as an E-P3 that would keep the built-in flash and build quality of the E-P2. Their signature trick is expected to be much faster …
