RECOMMENDATIONS??? – Do I buy a new Digital SLR or just update my lens?
I have an Olympus E-500, it’s a good camera, but I’m heading to China for 6 months and wanted get a new lens and found out I had limited choices. So I’ve got the following problem:
a) do I just buy a new lens for my Olympus, is it worth it?
b) or should I just upgrade and buy a new camera and if yes, what? I’ve been recommended a Canon 450D but can’t see much of a difference between that and the old 400D. Also I’d like a camera where I’ll be able to have a good choice of quality lenses. (recommendations?? for camera and lens?)

You choice seems to be to change camera systems OR just buy a second lens and continue to grow your Olympus system.
I will assume for the context of this question that you have the 14-42 mm lens. As a travel photographer, I can tell you the lens your will find that will best compliment your camera on your trip to China would be the 7-14 mm. It will give you amazing landscapes and architectural shots.
I was recently on over a nine week photo trip in the Caribbean and took three lenses; Nikon 12-24 mm (extreme wide angle), 24-85 mm (standard zoom) and 70-300 mm (long telephoto). Over 80 % of the 24 GB images of images I shot during the trip were shot with the 24-75 mm lens (yours is the 14-42 mm), about 20% with the 12-24 mm (like the 7-14 mm) and actually less than 5% using the telephoto.
All lenses made by Canon, Nikon and Olympus are excellent.
I usually haul around my Nikon D3 and D300 with four lenses and a SD600 external flash and a couple of packs of CF cards (6 to a pack) and that backpack weighs about 30 pounds. I have been doing this for many years, so I am used to carrying that much weight.
The Olympus with those two lenses will weigh much less than my kit and my be just perfect for your trip.
