Looking for a new digital camera: Bridge Camera or keep my current? Help Please?

I have two film SLRs. One is fully manual the other is an autofocus, fixed lens SLR….the only thing is….sometimes film development can be a bit expensive.

Right now i have a digital bridge SLR camera… olympus camedia 2500L. It has a true TTL viewfinder, it is an SLR but with a fixed glass aspherical lens. 3X optical zoom, built in flash, 2/3″ sensor size. Only 2.5MP though.

Im wondering, would a bridge camera with 4-7MP with an Electronic Viewfinder and 10+x optical zoom be a better choice for a beginner, amateur photographer…or should i hold on to the camera ive got?

btw, i cant afford a dslr so i want a bridge camera that will still be a good learning tool.

Thanks guys

I’m not sure what kind of money you have to work with. I know that for the “prosumer” range of cameras, stepping up to a new DSLR is not a lot more. With that in mind, if you’re open to it, you may be able to pick one up used that’s a couple years old with a kit lens on it, or maybe even a step up from the kit lens. Find the system that generally works better for you or that you prefer, then if you can check out ebay or craigslist or maybe even look around somewhere that carries older, but new equipment and see if you can’t pick one up for a decent price. I think even getting a Nikon D40 or the Canon digital rebel will be a better starting point than the bridge type camera you are looking at. The camera is just a piece of the system. You can upgrade it just like you would anything else.

Its not that the bridge cameras are necessarily bad, they’re great to learn on with full manual control and all. I learned on them. Stepping into a DSLR though is not a giant step up from that as far as what you can learn without it actually being a whole lot more. If you have a DSLR and one lens, its pretty much the same thing at that point but with a little more room to grow. Good Luck.
