I feel I have done enough research and I have narrowed down my choices to buy an SLR camera in the $500-$700 range between either of the named above. which one should I pick and why? or You may suggest a better camera of your taste other than the Nikon D40x?

thanks the Pentax camera’s were options I had already considered, tho I elimitated the pentax k100D due to it having only 6.1MP vs 10MP (the olympus).
the Pentax K10D is also awesome, but the price is like $150 more.
Too bad you don’t like the D40x … the only real choice after that in the Nikon line is the D200, but it is way beyond your budget, although well worth the extra investment.
Since you don’t want to compare camera to camera, I can only tell you that Ken Rockwell (a huge user of both Canon and Nikon DSLR’s prefers the D200 to any of the other cameras in its class) has a lot of good information on both the D40x and Rebel XTi.
