Nikon Digital Camera Techniques

Are there any good resources for new SLR owners on the web?

Looking for good resources such as how-to guides relating to the general use of the camera, techniques, lighting, and other aspects of using a digital SLR. I own a Nikon D-40 with the 18-55 and 55-200 lens, but am looking for any good information relating to SLR cameras.

www.dpreview.com has been a great resource for answers to various questions I’ve had over the years and they have a very active nikon forum.

www.nikonians.org (or is it org) has also been a good resource but I don’t visit it as frequently.

If you’re looking for lens reviews also check out www.slrgear.com which has what I consider the most complete and concise online reviews of SLR lenses bar none. If someone does know of a comparable site, I’d like to know of it as well since slrgear has not tested all the current lenses.

As for technique… well I’ve either bought books for the kind of photography I’m interested in or asked questions on the forums.

Another good resource are local photography clubs where you can get good feedback on your technique, gear you might be interested in, as well as your results (pictures you’ve taken).

Last but not least if you have a local friend with the same interest, then you can both learn from each other as well as drive each other to take better pictures.

I regularly (every couple of months) meet with a friend for a day of shooting and have photo challenge. We pick an interesting location, go there for a Saturday or Sunday, choose a general subject/topic to shoot there and go our own way for about an hour or two. We meet again afterwards (usually lunch) to review each other’s shots (we bring a laptop) then even take each other to the places where we took the pictures and share the details to learn from each other.

HTH.
