What problems will I encounter if I use a 70′s/80′s flash with a digital camera with hot shoe?
I’ve got a bunch of flash units from the 70′s and 80′s. A lot of Canon Speedlights, but no Nikon or Sony/Minolta flashes.
I’ve got three digital compacts with hot shoes: Nikon E5000, Canon G1 and Sony DSC-S85.
The Nikon and Canon will flash using assorted flashes, but the results are mixed.
The Sony has the proprietary Maxxum/Alpha shoe.
If the flash is dedicated, it can cause problems with other camera systems. That means the Canon flashes on the Nikon may be an issue. The Canon flash won’t work well on the G1 either, as it will be an older flash control system instead of E-TTL. Most likely A-TTL.
If the flash is an auto thyristor or manual unit, it should work as advertised. The Coolpix 5000 and the G1 at least, have enough manual control to use an auto flash. I have no idea about the Sony, but it should have a standard hot shoe, not the proprietary Maxxum/Alpha shoe.
It would be possible to fit a PC socket adapter into any of the camera’s hot shoe, and put a remote shoe on a bracket. Something like a Nikon AS-15 ($20) which will actually work in any hot shoe, not just Nikon. I use one with my Canon 30D. Better light, more options, and removes the dedication problem from the hot shoe.
