Underwater photography?
Is there a way that I can take underwater photography without using a waterproof camera? I have a Nikon Digital Coolpix P100 camera and I love the ocean…is there this special covering that allows it to go underwater?
There are two types of underwater ‘housing’ as they’re called. There’s a flexible pouch/bag type arrangement, into which most compact cameras will fit (they also do one for DSLR’s as well). I see you camera is a ‘bridge’ type, so you’d probable want a DSLR version. These are not specific to camera model. You operate the camera by pressing the buttons through the plastic housing.
The other type is a rigid plastic housing, which has buttons on the outside of the housing which in turn operate the camera’s buttons inside the housing. Because of this (buttons having to be in the right place) these types of housings are model-specific & if they don’t make one for your camera you’re out of luck.
The flexible bag type is cheaper, and is generally reliable provided you use it properly & take care of it. It will have shallow depth limitations however. See link;

If you take it too deep, not only will there be a greater chance of leaks, but the water pressure outside the bag will tend to push buttons you don’t want it too!! If you are swimming, snorkelling this sort of housing should be fine. The folks at Cameras Underwater are very helpful, so its worth giving them a ring if you are in the UK.
I can’t find a rigid housing for your particular camera model – they seem to make them for the compact Nikons & the DSLR’s but not the bridge camera!
With all housings the watertight seal is the weak spot. You need to make sure there is no sand, grit, hair, etc on the rubber seal when you close it or you’ll get leaks. Wash salt water off the housing when you get out the water while the camera is still sealed inside.
Good underwater images are about getting close to your subject (light levels fall off rapidly). Flash is not a good idea unless it is ‘off camera’.
