Which one is better value for money and a better purchase choice, Nikon D300 or Pentax Kx ?
I am thinking of buying a proper camera, i have never brought anything other than a digital compact before, and i am not sure what to go for. I am looking at spending around £400. If anyone knows anything that could help it would be much appreciated.
Thanks
The Pentax wins handily for value for the money because it is just as capable of capturing great images. But the K-x is in an entirely different class of cameras from the Nikon D300. But, I suspect you are thinking of the D3000 in which case, I could argue the K-x has better image quality at high ISO (in the lab). However, Nikon offers a broader selection of lenses and a clear growth path to (and direct compatibility with) professional bodies and lenses without changing brands. That’s not a total knock against Pentax because I think the K-x is as good an entry level camera as anyone else offers right now and the K-7 is a solid buy as a mid-range camera that actually offers a great deal of value when compared to a Nikon D90 or a Canon 50D.
If you are comparing apples to apple between the D3000 and K-x, my recommendation is take an SD card with you to a camera store and try both cameras. Don’t let the camera guy sell the camera, make up your own mind about which feels best in your hands. This is the most important issue because in the real world, image quality is largely the same and there’s no way you can look at an image an know it was shot with a K-x versus a D3000 without seeing the EXIF data attached to the original file
After you’ve compared the feel of the cameras in your hands, you need to decide which is easiest to use for you. Do the menus make sense? Can you quickly and easily adjust aperture, shutter speed, exposure compensation, white balance and ISO? These are important settings that you need to be able to change quickly. Ideally, you want to be able to adjust all of them without taking your eye out of the viewfinder so be sure to take note of how much of this information is available to you in the viewfinder.
Features in this class of cameras are largely the same. Nearly everyone offers simple, automated exposure modes but some are easier to use than others. Nikon is well known for offering a wider range of exposure compensation than anyone else which makes their cameras very useful for HDR photography. Pentax cameras however also offer unique exposure modes and versatility not found in other entry level cameras. You have to decide which feature set is import to you and ultimately, you’ll make your own decision about which camera is the best value for your money.
