what kind of lenses do i need?
I am buying a nikon d40
and i can either buy it for 500$ and that includes one lesne
or i can buy just the body for 300$ without any lenses but it comes with a free stand and camera cleaning kit and case

Body only deals are really good if you are upgrading and have existing lenses, or you want to buy a (cheaper?) non OEM lens. You will need to check the prices of alternative lenses in your local area, eg with a specialist camera store. Tamron and Sigma are two well known non-OEM brands that make affordable lenses, but there are a range of manufacturers, quality and prices.
The number of lenses that you need is a bit more problematic. In most cases, a single kit lens is going to be something like an 18-55mm zoom, and another lens in the 70-200mm range might be added. These have zoom factors around x3, and with modern materials and manufacturing techniques, are relatively easy to make, so they are not too expensive. You can get a single lens to cover this range of focal lengths, ie 18-200mm, but they are more difficult to design and make, and more expensive as a result.
A high ratio zoom normally covers what is known as the wide-angle, normal and medium telephoto ranges. This will allow you to shoot in a wide variety of circumstances, from landscapes and cityscapes through to capturing images of smaller animals in the wild.
There are clearly limitations with any one lens setup, but if you are relatively new to photography, there are going to be relatively rare. A good one or two lens system covering the focal range from about 15 or 18mm through to 200mm should cover the vast majority of possible shooting situations.
