Home (Outdoor) Network Security Camera Recommendations?
I’m looking for a network security camera that I can put on the front porch (out of the rain/snow, but not out of the cold!). It needs to meet the following critera: 1) Can take HIGH RES pictures – I need to be able to actually SEE who was there, and identify them in court, for example. 2) It must be able to take pictures when it senses motion. 3) As there is lighting on the porch, night vision isn’t required, but a low-light feature might be helpful. 4) It needs to store the pics centrally on a local server via ethernet, it case someone tries to damage it. Lastly 5) It has to be “home affordable” – I’ve found this camera for $3000, now I need a home version.
I’ve looked everywhere, and all recommendations had horrbile reviews. 3 out of 5 stars at best. HELP ME OUT!!!

PoE Cameras – Intelligent Video Surveillance Solution in Action
PoE, or Power over Ethernet, provides the option of connecting IP cameras to an IP network using the same Ethernet cable that is used for data transfer. Thus the powering of devices is made easy. Ethernet networks provide the speed and performance needed for today’s IP video applications. The major benefit is the cost savings associated with installation, as there is no need to install this camera near a power source. Power and data are received through a single Ethernet cable, which also enables easier application of uninterrupted power supplies (UPS) to ensure operation 24 hours a day and seven days a week.
Since being ratified in a standard called IEEE802.3af in September 2009, PoE technology is ready to deliver safe power over a single Ethernet cable to a broad range of security products, including access control systems, IP cameras, outdoor cameras and others. The benefit of this new standard is that it relies on the field proven detection and protection concept. This has enabled quick and safe adoption of this standard by security equipment vendors.
The PoE standard has been widely accepted by the security industry due to the major benefit it offers for device installation and maintenance. It enables the deployment of network cameras in difficult to reach locations, and simplifies the job of resetting and relocating equipment and supplying backup power easily. It also makes maintenance of equipment easier as faulty cameras can be detected and shut down, preventing damage to related equipment. You can view streaming video, hear sounds and record from any Internet connection.
Challenges of Setting up IP Camera Surveillance
In today’s fast changing tech world we all know that network servers are very powerful with huge amounts of available bandwidth. But before PoE can really take off, the following should be considered:
-
It must be able to accommodate powered devices that require 30 watts or more of power.
-
Check whether Ethernet cable already exists as this will save you a lot of money.
-
Look for devices that offer PoE, and ensure that there is enough power in the switch or midspan.
-
As WAN bandwidth is limited, design your system so that the WAN bandwidth is not overloaded.
-
VLANs generally provide a better and more cost efficient solution than a separate network.
Future Proofing Your Network
Power over Ethernet is changing the security scenario in ways that most of us cannot imagine. High Power over Ethernet is closer to your desk than you think. These PoE cameras are becoming increasingly popular and widely adopted, and it is expected that more vendors will add PoE IP cameras to their portfolio.
