Question about the LCD screen on the Canon Rebel XTi?

I read a fiew previous questions about this but still am not clear. I just got a Canon Rebel XTi, my first full SLR, and can not take a picture without looking through the view finder. I read the manual, and some stuff on-line, and it looks like the screen is just for the menue/settings and reviewing pictures, but not to see what you are taking of. I have been using a Minolta DiMage 7, which is a step before SLR, and it gave the option of using the LCD screen or the viewfinder, like a point and shoot. I just find it weird that you would have to look through the viewfinder. I’m kinda disapointed. Can anyone tell me if it’s possible to use the LCD screen to see what you’re aiming at? Also, if all DSLR cameras are like this? I may be just ignorant, but I find this a little weird. Thanks everyone!

You can take the picture without looking through the viewfinder but the only way you can see what in in your frame is by looking through the viewfinder. The viewfinder in any SLR camera is the same thing that your lens sees. You should not be disappointed because in non-SLR cameras, the LCD is simply an estimation of what the lens will capture, many times edges can be trimmed off. If you really need an LCD screen, I believe that Olympus E-Volt’s are the only DSLR on the market with an optional LCD display. The Canon Digital Xti is a great camera regardless.
