High D Camera Lighting Systems
is PAL 1080p/25 hd video always interlaced?
The reason I’m asking is because I’m getting confused.
My camera (Panasonic HDC-HS9) is filming at it’s highest rate of 1920x1080p and it’s a PAL camera as I’m in the UK, so I’m assuming it’s 25fps.
The native AVCHD format is a bit too much for my system, so I’m trying to encode the video to a format with similar quality with the Adobe Media Encoder.
Even when I bring a raw .m2ts straight from the camera into Premiere, the footage looks interlaced in the monitor window.
If anyone could shed a little light, that’d be great as I’m very confused.

Your HDC-HS9 has several video modes… be sure you are setting the correct one. It supports both 1920×1080/50i and 1920×1080/25p… so sure, it’s quite possible you have been recording interlaced. Also, the HDV-like mode, 1440×1920/50i, is always interlaced.
If you’re seeing true field to field motion, “mice teeth”, etc. in a single frame, you are definitely shooing in interlaced mode. Here’s a bit about it:

Of course, if your output target is also an interlaced display (TV, Blu-Ray, DVD, etc), there won’t be any problem using the 1080/50i video. You’ll also lose most if not all of the interlacing effect if you’re downsizing from HD to SD or web formats. I have done many shoots in 1080/60i, made great Blu-Ray and DVD from this, and also online stuff that looks fine.
