How do I use Photoshop to achieve the best black and white tones?
I use a digital SLR instead of film, and I never use the in-camera Monochrome mode. However, I do like black and white shots very much, especially film ones. I want to somehow get the best, most accurate black and white tones in Photoshop. Anyone know a good method? The desaturation technique and even the black and white adjustment layer just don’t seem authentic enough to me- I don’t know how to describe it, but they’re too greyish or bluish.
For example, I still want to tweak this shot that I took in Florida a bit…

Ideas would be much appreciated.
You may be good to practice Camera options first, take your color shots, but take a few b&w with variable settings, then compare in editor later,
With editor, load image and lower saturation 80%, then adjust hue, and note that each color tone changes the b&w range,
Once you find a type of setting in that range, view histogram and value rgb levels, and compare with original color image,
