Beginners Digital SLR Cameras – 4 Entry Level DSLRs Top The List
The best digital SLR cameras for beginners may also be the least expensive ones. Even if the prospective buyer has deep pockets, the cheaper models also are the most user friendly.
Recommendations include models from Canon and Nikon, the two most popular digital slr manufacturers, but Pentax and Olympus are also make great beginner DSLRs.
Criteria for beginners’ models include great image quality, an easy to use menu, fast response of the camera to the photographer’s actions, a decent assortment of available lenses, and good support.
Choosing one of the more popular brands will necessarily lend itself to the support issue. You can go on numerous websites and forums to find the answers to your questions from like-minded photographers who are willing and able to give you the information you need.
Since Canon and Nikon are the best sellers, there will be more resources, but that does not mean there isn’t support for the others. The Internet is an awesome resource tool. Even though you may not have a friend or neighbor who owns the same type of camera as you, the Internet is not limited to your neighborhood or your city. It is world-wide and comprehensive.
With that in mind, here is a short list of digital SLR cameras that are good for folks just getting into digital SLR photography:
- Canon Rebel T2i (aka 55oD)
- Nikon D3100
- Pentax K-x
- Olympus E-620
If you look at the user ratings online at Amazon, you will see that these 4 models have pretty much identical high ratings at about 4.6 stars out of 5 possible. That is quite impressive.
The features and benefits are close with the exception of the Olympus E-620 which does not have video (all the other models have HD video). But the Oly does have a tilt LCD screen which is not present on the other models.
The price tags are not identical, with the Pentax coming in more than $100 less than any of the others, and the Canon at the top of the list.
Now the fun begins. You have to decide which entry level DSLR is right for you. Just a little hint here.. Any one of them will be great. As mentioned already, just check the user ratings on any one of these models. They are the highest rated cameras on the market.

Differences between Digital SLR Cameras
Whether you are experienced or new in the world of Digital SLR Cameras it can always be difficult to sort through all the brands, models and makes. To assist in finding the right Digital SLR for you, I’ve compiled a list of four Digital SLR Cameras and explain some of their capabilities and features.
Canon: A great Canon Digital SLR Camera for beginners is the XSi 450D. This easy to use piece of hardware makes splendid photos with the same simplicity of a point-and-shoot. It’s equipped with a high transfer rate in read and write with a 4GB memory card, meaning high storage capacity and low battery consumption. Its features include, but are not limited to, a battery pack and charger, USB interface cable and video cable as well as a tripod and an instruction manual. It’s a great first for those interested in Digital SLR Cameras.
Nikon: The Nikon D40 Digital SLR is another fine piece of equipment. The D40 features only 6 megapixels fitted onto the format sensor, meaning the sensitivity of each pixel is higher. The D40 can shoot 2.5 frames each second and contains an ISO range of 1600 – 200, including an option for HI 1. It also contains in-camera effects and editing functions on a new retouch menu located on the 2.5 inch LCD Monitor. This is a great find for any novice looking to hone his or her skills.
Olympus: For the novice looking to expand his or her knowledge of photography, The Olympus E420 Digital Camera is a perfect fit. This model features an autofocus with a Live View feature, allowing seamless display of subjects on the LCD screen, just like a point-and-shoot. The Shadow Adjustment feature that comes with this SLR allows for pictures to be taken in otherwise too dark or underexposed scenes. It also features 18 scene select modes for common situations like portrait, landscape or sport. These make sure your otherwise difficult photographs always come out stunning.
Pentax: Last but not least, there is the Pentax K2000 Digital SLR . This SLR has 10.2 Megapixel capabilities along with a 3X zoom feature. The K2000 features Pentax Shake reduction, allowing for clear photos in action situations. It weighs in at only 1.1 pounds and features a simple control layout geared towards those who have just stepped up from compact point-and-shoots to Digital SLR Cameras.
All these models are in the same price bracket and are great introductions into the world of Digital SLR Cameras. Now decide what meshes with your personality and necessities best. Whichever you choose you’re guaranteed to be shooting more photos better than ever before.
