ISO settings in digital camera and the DSLR?
Dear all,
I shot a few pictures with my Olympus digital camera and at ISO 640, it’s nowhere as sharp as the one shot by a friend using a Nikon with a setting of ISO 1600.
Now, I understand that at such high ISO setting, the shutter speed will be faster (than ISO 640) but I thought it should be slower to allow more light in?
Can this same setting at night be used for shooting fast-moving objects in daylight as well?
Right now Nikon has some of the best low noise performance at high ISOs of any cameras on the market. Here is what a recent article in popular photography said about the D700.
“Noise reduction doesn’t significantly reduce resolution until ISO 6400 and beyond. As you step up toward the D700′s top ISO of 25,600 (Nikon calls it Hi-2), RAW gives you the option to preserve detail or sacrifice it in the name of reduced noise.
Yet even with noise reduction at its highest setting, the D700 serves up 1960 lines at ISO 25,600. For perspective, consider that, at its worst, the D700 comes within 100 lines of the 12.8MP Canon EOS 5D’s best resolution, 2025 lines at ISO 100.”
I don’t know what cameras you are comparing but as others have already said the APSc sensor is much much larger than the one in a point and shoot. Larger sensor = more light to each pixle = better color saturation, higher dynamic range, better geometric accuracy and lower noise.
As to the last part using a higher ISO and/or a larger aperature can let you keep a higher shutter speed in lower light. But as with all things there are limits and you need to learn the realtionship between these such as going from ISO 200 to 400 doubles the light while going from 1/60 sec to 1/250 shutter speed cuts it in half. They are all related to each other.
