Digital Camera Flash Memory Card
Is there digital camera with a built-in hard drive?
Seems like a no-brainer but I’ve never seen one. A digital still camera that uses a small hdd instead of flash memory cards. They have camcorders like this but no still cams? Keep in mind I mean a quality, dedicated still camera, not a pda or phone or mp3 player or other device that has a camera included. Is there such a beast?
The closest I know of was the microdrive format, which was compatable with compact flash cameras (known as type II compact flash cards) microdrives were minature hard drives which gave relatively high capacity back in the days when flash memory was still very expensive.
Microdrives came in various capacities such as 512, 768 and 1GB, and though expensive, cost a lot less than contemporary compact flash cards of a similar capacity.
Microdrives had a few problems that makes flash memory cards preferable:
Power: The disc has to rotate and this uses up the camera battery
Speed: The slow RPM and time taken to get up to speed meant that they could never match CF cards off the mark. I can’t recall the maximum data rate, but I’m fairly confident they wouldn’t come close to UDMA CF cards.
Stability: It’s a mechanical drive with contact between the memory and write head, any jolts could damage the drive where as CF cards are solid state.
These days it’s a no brainer, very large capacity fast Compact Flash (& other flash memory format) cards are so cheap that you wouldn’t consider something as fragile as a hard drive in your camera.
