Digital Canon Rebel XSI.. Blurry when set to timer?
Hello! I’m new to photography, and I have discovered a problem with my Digital Canon Rebel XSI or its settings.
When I set it to auto-timer, the pictures invariably come out COMPLETELY blurry, for some reason. All settings do this — sports, non-flash, landscape — you name it. It comes out blurry, everything, in the photo.
Why is this so? The camera is situated on a very firm surface and is not shaking whatsoever, so this baffles me.
First things first. Come out of the PIC modes. Forget full auto also. Go into P mode. Its still pretty much automatic, but it does give you the option to take control over some parameters such as how the camera is focusing and custom functions. It is in these two areas that you find the solution to your issues:
If you enable custom function 7 (i think) this enables mirror lock up, which eliminates camera shake, it also reduces the self timer to 2s rather than 10s.
The other advice applies, check you have the lens set to AF, check your AF mode (if its a static subject use Ai Focus and see if the points that light up are over the area you want in focus, if not switch to one shot AF and select the AF point you wish to be in focus)
In P mode you don’t need to bother with other camera settings if you don’t want to, the camera will do the bulk of the work for you, but as you are trying something quite specific, you need to give the camera a little help.
The steps I’ve described should help you. A tripod and a cable remote would be inexpensive but invaluable for this kind of work.
Your camera has live view and supports tethered capture. If you have a laptop this would also let you preview and adjust focus via your laptop, so you know that you are getting it right.
