Will low level formatting on a canon camera delete even erased photos for good?
I know that you can restore photos off a memory card even when they have been deleted, will low level formatting make it impossible to restore? I have some pictures I really dislike and hope that no one ever wants to restore the memory card, will it work?
I haven’t heard anyone make the distinction between low level / high level formatting in well over a decade. Formatting a memory cards is more of a high level format (in which you blast away the file system – you delete the file names – but essentially all the data is still there.) In practical terms however, you´d have to be pretty determined to retrieve anything off of a formatted card. The person would have to have a reason to attempt this, and a clue what they´re doing.
If you´re really worried, fill the card with useless files, reformat, and repeat a dozen times. This will wash away any trace of the original pictures. Or if you´re absolutely paranoid, simply destroy the card – they´re cheap enough to replace.
