Why do you have to format a sd media/memory card?

I got a brand new Canon camera that uses the SD memory card, I already got 3 other exact SD cards from my old Canon. Can I use the same card in this new camera or will something bad happen? I am just wondering so I don’t mess up my sd card because I have some images I would like to remain on there. Thanks for all your help!!!

It is a good idea to format your cards after copying you image files to your computer. This refreshes the card and writes new file folders and and a new image index file.

This process (formatting) prevents corruption, so you may never have to buy an image recovery program.
