I’m looking to get into film photography. Is this a good deal? Is the canon-ae1 a good film camera?
I had one of these in the early 1980′s and it was a GREAT camera. It had an electronic shutter, but only needed one battery which ran both the shutter and the light meter. I never had it fail and the battery lasted for years. For $30 I’d probably buy it regardless but here a couple things to check when buying this (or any other used camera):
Verify the ASA/ISO dial still turns. The camera is 27 years old, which is probably older than you are. Some things wear out. It should work, but if it doesn’t it’s not the end of the world. You can always use it at whatever ISO it displays and figure the equivalent exposure.
Check that the light meter works – it also may not be dead accurate, but you’ll learn to compensate. You may have to buy a battery to do this. Ask the seller to check the battery and if its dead, get a new one. Verify there is no gunk in the battery well.
Open it up and make sure it is clean. Set the shutter dial to B and trip the shutter, go to 1 and trip, all the way through. Again, the shutter speed may not be in dead calibration, but what you’re looking for is a distinct reduction in time the shutter remains open as you progress through the settings. While you’re doing this inspect the shutter curtains – be sure they are clean and have no creases or folds. A folded or creased shutter curtain is a dealbreaker.
Remove the lens, be sure the back elements are clean and that the mounts (screw type as I recall, might be bayonette) are not bent. Verify the camera mount has no crimping in the place you screw in the lens. Open the lens to its widest aperture (2 or 2.8) and click it into each stop. You should feel a physical “stop” at each number and the diaphragm should close down so the hole in the lens gets smaller. Open the lens up again to 2 or 2.8 and hold the lens up to a light source and look for bubbles. Do this for the other lens as well. Bubbles can cause soft spots in the image – but I would still buy the camera and see if there’s a problem. I have some of my grandpa’s old box Kodaks and some of them have bubbles, but it doesn’t effect the shot enough to worry about and these cameras are about 100 years old.
Finally load a roll of film into the camera and be sure it advances properly.
My gut says everything is okay – these cameras were built to last through the wars and then some. I carted mine everywhere and it took a hell of a beating. I gave it to a deserving student a few years ago, and as far as I know that thing is still going. And for $30 you can’t beat it with a stick.
