Camera Raw Presets

Does shooting a RAW image and converting to JPEG of TIF without much of an edit make sense?

Will the converted JPEG file look any better than simply shooting a fine JPEG? The reason I ask is because I do not typically do much editing after take a photo. For comparative purposes I took shots of the same image, one RAW and one JPEG. I didn’t do anything to the RAW file, I just used Picasa to convert it to a JPEG then compared it to the JPEG I shot from the camera. The only noticable difference was that the stuffed animal’s hair could be seen in the converted JPEG and not in the JPEG shot from the camera. Is this common? I don’t mind the extra step if converting a very lighted edited RAW image to JPEG is going to produce a better quliaty image.

Or should I shoot RAW and convert to a .tif file? Again I don’t do a whole lot of editing, I might use a preset or make a few manual adjustments but not much.

Anyway please offer your opinions on this, thanks

RAW is just bitmap basically. The camera converts it to JPEG to save space on the memory card.

I never found the need to use RAW on my D70, but I do know a couple people who have experimented with it. To the best of my knowledge, the one and only reason you’d ever really need to use RAW is if you’re making HDR photos — in which case you’d want very high detail for each exposure so the final image will have good detail. Otherwise, there’s no point in using RAW unless you plan on sending massive bitmap images to your friends. Converting the RAW to JPEG on your computer is doing the exact same thing the camera will do for you if you set the default output as JPEG. : )

Review: Nikon D5100 DSLR
The latest addition to Nikon’s expansive DSLR line, the 16 megapixel D5100, fits neatly between the entry-level D3100 and the more sophisticated D7000.
