Q – A large art gallery has hired you to photograph every individual framed painting in the gallery for an upcoming exhibition. They require colour accurate copies of the artwork for use in a catalogue.

Now i put 100mm macro lens in but unfortunately this was not the right answer :o (

The idea is to keep the distortion to a minimum, and shoot with the camera parallel to the images

Any help would be greatly appreciated xxx

Short answer is – 90mm TS and 100mm macro (one on each body there is a reason you’re given two cameras), tripod (with special permission). Below explains why it should be this choice.

There are two problems with a macro lens, you see with macro lenses is that they are optimised to close focusing. To fill the frame with the painting (some of them will be absolutely huge) you will need to be quite far away, which means that the macro lens will not be at it’s optimum focus distance.

Also how do you intend on correcting perspective for larger paintings? You will need a ladder or even a cherry picker to get the the right height to use the 100mm macro.

For these two reasons the 90mm T/S lens is the one you should use. You can be at floor level and shoot large paintings, and correct for perspective because you’ll be looking upwards.

You should be using a tripod, as a T/S lens is much slower to operate (you need to set focus, and add tilt and shift manually), so you want the film/sensor plane to remain still while you do all of that. Plus you will want to shoot at f/8 or so to maximise the lens performance, which indoors at ISO 100 would put you well into the tripod zone.

That said you should also be putting the 100mm macro on a second body, because there are some extremely small paintings too, where a macro lens would be useful, again you will need to use a tripod. You may want to throw a 24mm TS just in case.

You should also state that because you have been hired as a photographer, that you should be given special dispensation to use a tripod in the gallery.

What is the best lens for scenics?
With all its colours spring has blossomed in the interior of British Columbia and photographers are grabbing their cameras and tripods and heading out to record that beauty.
