Do Canon A-1, AE-1 (etc) Film Camera lens fit Canon Rebel xti (etc) digital camera lens?
Do Canon A-1, AE-1 (etc) Film Camera lens fit Canon Rebel xti (etc) digital camera lens? Are film camera lenses interchangable with digital cameras?
Unfortunately, no. The Canon AE-1 and similar manual focus Canon cameras use lenses with the FD-mount. The Canon digital cameras use a different EF-mount lens, which is the same as that which was used on autofocus EOS film cameras. The manual focus FD and autofocus EF lenses are not compatible.
So, if you have Canon autofocus lenses from a film camera they are compatible with digital cameras. But, if you have manual focus lenses you’ll be out of luck. The only main companies whose manual film camera lenses will still directly fit a digital camera are Nikon and Pentax.
You will occasionally see adaptors that will allow you to mount an FD lens on a new EOS/EF mount camera. However, these have certain limitations – you will lose autofocus (obviously), metering is more difficult, and they either degrade image quality (if they contain optics) or you lose focus at infinity (if they don’t contain optics).
Ironically, on Canon digital cameras, these adaptors tend to work better with some other manufacturer’s manual lenses than Canon’s own FD lenses.
In short, the adaptors are usable if you have very special lenses you want to keep using, or some special applications, but in general they are probably not worth the cost and trouble. You can read more about it here:
