New photographer, interested in taking pictures of models but how?

Just curious and would love some advice from an experience photographer, when you just started where did you find a model to shoot pictures, how do you approach them? do you need a website with a portfolio even if you’ve never taken glamor type shots? What sort of equipment do you need is it a mandatory to have lights and other things or can you just take pictures with your camera?

I am in the Toronto, Canada area so any place that can be recommended would be great, thanks for the advice

I will add some to fotoace’s answer, as I feel you may not fully understand his answer. TFP means Time For Print. In other words, the model pays you nothing, and you pay the model nothing. It is a mutual exchange type of arrangement, wherein each of you gain needed portfolio photos to use as you please. A contract really should be signed stating YOU have full rights to use the photos and the model should also have a contract stating SHE or HE also has full rights to the photos to use as desired. Today, the Prints have pretty much been replaced with a CD, and the exchange is called TFCD. The model provides you her modeling service, and you provide all high resolution photos on CD.

No, it is not a must to have “lights and other things”, but frankly, the wording of your question sounds as if you are very in-experienced in this type of photography. Yes, you can “just take pictures with your camera”, but some good, creative lighting is still going to be needed. What are you planning to do, just blast away with on camera flash? This will give very poor, harsh, amateur looking photos, which will be a major disservice to both you and your client. At least have a good outdoor location and shoot under the proper conditions, which is NOT in direct sun. At the very least, you need to have a high quality, powerful off camera flash for a fill light and a reflector or two.

I realize you have to start somewhere, but perhaps you need to do as much free work for your friends and their friends as you can to at least get a feel for this type of work and some photos under your belt. Approaching this as you are is sort of like a doctor advertising a new practice before he ever attends medical school.
