What is the comparison of a camera lens to a set of variable power binoculars (300mm lens = what power)?
On a 35mm camera, 300mm is about 6x magnification. On a ‘normal’ DSLR (crop frame, not full frame) its about 9x magnification. It varies depending on the exact sensor though.
The zoom number quoted for lenses is normally just the range from wide to telephoto. A 28-300 and an 18-200 are both ~11x zooms, though the magnification is different for both.
