Digital SLR camera…. cleaning, how & when ?

I am trying to learn everything I can about using my Nikon D80 well. I just got it a few months ago and knew nothing about photography with such a camera. I’ve been reading & learning. I am wondering, When is it recommended to clean the insides of the camera? Regularly? Once a month? Never unless you see spots on your images? And when cleaning is necessary, how do you do it, and what do you use? I have a lens cleaning kit with lens paper, a cleaning agent, and a little brush with an air bubble on the one end… are these what you would use to clean the insides? I don’t think my camera needs cleaning, and I would be very wary of actually doing it, but I feel this information is super important to know and I cannot quite seem to find a book that answers it for me.

Thanks.

First, check in the Owner’s Manual for the section on “Care & Cleaning” of your camera. You’ll find excellent guidance and suggestions.

Although there are sensor cleaning kits available, I suggest letting a camera tech do that if and when it needs to be done. You definitely do not want to use any liquids inside your camera. Let a pro do it.

Avoid changing lenses in dusty, windy conditions to minimize the chance of getting dust on your sensor. Always hold your camera with the lens mount tilted down.

One thing you need to buy (if you haven’t) is a UV filter to protect the front element of your lens. Choose from Hoya, B+W, Singh-Ray, Tiffen, Heliopan. Its better to clean a filter than the lens plus the filter will be cheaper to replace.

***** EDIT!! *****

Please ignore the suggestion by “endangeredsavior” about using compressed air inside your camera. That is one quick way to destroy your camera by either damaging the shutter or mirror or sensor (or all three) and by driving dust and grit into places inside the camera where it can do real harm. Compressed air is for inflating tires and beach balls and basketballs and air mattresses – NOT for camera cleaning.
