What type of sensor offers better image quality, CMOS or CCD?
Guys,
I’m really trying to get to the bottom of this with no success. I read about the basic operating principle of each, tried to look up several articles and reviews, but information is dated, contradictory and scant at best. Some say CMOS gives better SNR and dynamic range, others exactly the opposite.
All other things being equal (scene, shooting settings on camera, lens quality, same sensor size & pixel count), which technology offers better image quality and in which respect?
CMOS sensors – although increasingly popular (at least with DSLRs) – are still more expensive and there has to be a reason for that (other than manufacturing costs).
Any help is much appreciated.
CCDs offer better *inherent* image quality; CMOS sensors are cheaper to manufacture–in the long run. CCDs don’t have a lot of support built into the sensor, so they are inherently less noisy (less electrical interference); CMOS sensors require a lot of supporting electronics on the sensor, and this makes them have more noise BUT significantly cheaper to manufacture, once costs have been made up.
However, once you factor in the supporting chips off the sensor, CMOS sensors and CCD sensors become equal in image quality. These supporting chips are what keeps CMOS cameras expensive. The supporting chips process the signal from the sensor, eliminating noise and producing good images. As you can see, both Nikon and Canon, for example, use CMOS sensors in their cameras (but in Nikon’s case, not all of them–the Nikon D40 and D60 have CCDs).
Today, it’s not an issue whether a camera has CMOS or CCD sensors. All things being equal, the output from the cameras is virtually identical. What matters more are the supporting chips off the sensor, because these chips are what eliminates the noise/artifacts and produces the output file (whether that’s a jpeg or a RAW file).

CMOS AND CCD FIELD OF SIGHT
The field of view provided by any camera is determined by a pattern of image sensor size and lens . The bigger the image sensor, the wider the potential field of view. While a 90 degree field of view may be sufficient for some smaller vehicles, a 120 degree field of view is perfect You should steer clear of any system that produces poorer than a 90 degree field of view.
Given the selection, you should always select a rear view camera system that utilizes a high quality CCD image sensor from a well known manufacturer. If the system you require doesn’t state that it utilizes a “CCD” imager, then it almost certainly doesn’t.
NIGHT SIGHT
Always take into account purchasing a rear view camera system that does include night vision lighting. The infrared night vision illuminators should provide a minimum of 10 feet of illumination, and 20 to 30 feet or more of illumination is clearly recommended.
WIRED VS WIRELESS SYSTEM

I prefer a wired system for reliability. If you really insist on a wireless reverse camera system, then you will have to settle for a inferior quality picture due to intereference etc, always go for maximum quality in this respect
