Two Camera Decision (Optical Zoom vs. HD and Megabits)?

Two Cameras, Which is Best?

I am going on a trip to Europe and will need to take quick and sudden pictures.
I normally don’t zoom very often, but somtimes do.
I would like to have the best quality, fine FINE detail pictures.
I don’t anticipate blowing the pictures up very far.
I don’t care about croping the pictures on the camera as I can worry about that later after the trip and would rather have too much of a picture than not enough.
I worry that the one is better because it says High Definition.
I also worry about one being “Digital IS” and the other “Optical IS”

Any help would be appricated! Quick!

review on 1275

They both sound like decent cameras.
You have to decide what you want more: small size, or better better zoom.
The Z712 has the better zoom (12x optical) but for a slighly larger compact, the z1275 has a very respectable 5x optical zoom. The other poster is right that in general the larger CCD in the 1275 should get you a better pic, but that doesn’t automatically mean a better picture. Clicking on the user reviews on each of the above link shows you many happy camera owners, and only a few dissatisfied owners.

Both camera’s will give “fine” pictures.

If you are going to take movies, the HD movie feature sure sounds cool. Buy several LARGE memory cards!! (I bought 3 of the 4GB sd cards for a disney trip)

Optical IS is way better than Digital IS.

I think they are both good enough that you should make the choice on 12x zoom vs smaller size. Zoom is cool, but “pocket camera” is very nice too.

My personal vote is the pocket camera. If a camera is too big, you will not take it with you. If it fits in your pocket, it is a no-brainer, it is easy to carry.
(Although the 712 is one of the smallest super zooms)

The 1275 is too new to have a pro review on that site
