Sd Memory Card Question?
I just got back from Alaska and took many photos on two different memory cards on a Canon PowerShot SD780 Digital Elph. When I got home to edit and finish the pictures, one memory card worked and would import the pictures (the one I was using more recently). However, my first memory card, which I filled up, will not register on my computer. In fact, when I insert it into my camera, the camera won’t even turn on! Just a small movement of the lens and a flash of the green light. I then inserted it into a Nikon D60 and it said, “This memory card cannot be used. Card may be damaged. Insert another card.”
1. Is my memory corrupted (I think so)
2. If this is the case, where can I take it to be recovered or AT LEAST looked at by an expert in this field.
Thank you.
2 things:
1) Formatting the card will destroy all the pictures that may be on it. They may be recoverable with software, but probably not. If at all possible, never format on your computer. Always try in the camera (either one) first.
2) It doesn’t happen often, but memory cards CAN affect the camera. If it turns on without the card in it, but won’t (or acts strange) when it’s in, the card is the problem. If it won’t turn on with or without the card, then it’s the battery.
How big is the card; it makes a difference. They may look the same, but there is a difference between SD (2GB or less) & SD-HC (4GB+). The SD780IS can use a 4GB card, but I don’t know if it will work with anything bigger. If you bought an 8GB or 16GB card (don’t know why for a point & shoot) that would probably cause problems.
Also, everyone is looking to save a buck. If you found some generic brand card that went for $5 where everyone else was $30 for the same thing, it probably failed & won’t be usable (and probably not recoverable).
Go to a real camera store, they might have software to try and recover your pictures. Just don’t get your hopes up.
Good luck.
