Focusing on a subject and fading the background?

I wouldn’t even call myself an amatuer photographer but I particularly enjoy certain techniques that I see in photographs from various mediums. I wanted to know how I could take a picture like the one found in the provided link http://selective-focus-photography.com/yahoo_site_admin/assets/images/179831272_0f33cfb53f.135104621_std.jpg

It shows a flower that is focused and all the flowers behind it, although the viewer knows they are there, only view them in blurry or faded way.

Can this effect be achieved by any old point and shoot digital camera or must one need an advanced camera that more serious photgraphers use. If it can be acheived by any camera is there some certain setting you click in order to get this shot? Also, what is this technique in photography actually called? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Ironically – the name of the technique you are asking about is the name of a site you’re pointing onto with your example. It’s called Selective Focus. Sometimes it’s also referred to as achieving shallow depth of field.

For best results you do need an advanced camera, however this can be achieved with some p&s cameras to certain degree if you try.

What you need is three things:
1. Wide aperture (small number)
2. Long focal distance (large number)
3. Being close to the subject.

The three things are sort of eliminating each other, so you may look for a compromise or just work with small subjects (flowers, insects, etc).

How to do it on p&s:

1. Wide aperture – if your camera has aperture priority mode usually marked as “A” or “Av” on the dial set camera to it and change the aperture to smallest number possible (e.g. 4 is better than 5.6, and so on). If it does not have this mode, but has picture modes (landscape, portrait, flower, etc) set it to portrait mode, or to macro (flower) mode, check which works better for you – it will probably try to do the wide aperture automatically. If even that is not available… Well, just try your luck without this step…

2. Long focal distance – that means zoom all the way in (as for a far-away subject), but only with OPTICAL zoom. Never use digital zoom. Turn it off in your camera settings.

3. Get as close to the subject as you can, but so that the camera can still focus – there’s only so close you can get. Just how close – depends on particular lens.

That’s about all you can do. Try it, if your camera has decent lens you may be able to do it to certain degree. If not, then you’re out of luck.

Good luck,
LEM.
