Pentax DA 40mm and 70mm lens review
The planet’s most lethal six-shot shooter. The Milkor 40mm MGL
The world’s most lethal six-shot revolver.
The firepower that may be unleashed by one individual has risen dramatically in recent years, with the threshold raised again lately with the arrival of a powerful new MIlkor MGL Multiple Grenade Launcher which may be used by the U. S. Marines as an experimental weapon. The MGL is the latest release in a long line of multi-shot, revolver-type, 40mm, hand-held, grenade launchers from South African weapons manufacturer Milkor ( a much earlier version was employed against the aliens in the film, Predator ), and it delivers a great firepower increase relative to the Marines’ current single shot 40mm grenade launchers.
That the MGL can launch 6 40mm grenades inside of 3 seconds is scary enough, but several factors make it especially destructive. The 1st is the special sight that allows a Marine to “follow” the grenade to the destination and right away adjust and chase up with a lethal volley of corrected fire. The second factor is the wide range of ammo available to the MGL is the Martin Electronics (MIE) Direct Range Air-Consuming Ordnance ( DRACO ) Grenade. MIE’s brochure on the thermobaric DRACO round says it all – When you completely, definitely need to dump the enemy! Now you can deliver 6 DRACOs in 3 seconds anywhere inside four hundred metres. One MIE DRACO will shred a sizable building into rubble. Oh, and the MGL weighs just 6 kilograms empty about 13 lbs or 7.5 kilograms with 6 DRACOS.
Similarly the HELLHOUND ammo is twice as lethal as regular rounds. Add to the ammo list the HUNTIR IR camera fired 1000m into the air by this weapon, launching the parachute held camera over the battle field, giving you a helicopter view for several minutes. It works even at night. The chances are endless, and you can carry 6 differing kinds of rounds pre-loaded. You are prepared for any possibility. Keeping in mind this is a 6 shooter revolver of another order. For technical data please see brochure for MGL at Multi-shot grenade launcher
You can keep your BFG – the MGL is probably going to become the ultimate weapon for first person shooter PC gamers too, and currently it is being added to several of these PC games, and 3-D wireframes of it abound. It was employed in the film, the Transformers.
If you had not spotted, Defense Review has the specifications on the MGL and its precedent the MGL-140, MGL-105 and the legendary MGL MK-1, and their article is available with some excellent detail shots of the MGL-140. See Multi-shot grenade launcher
There is also a good report by Marine Gunnery Sgt. Oliva on the Marines’ web site which is his raving story of using it in Iraq, and feedback from several of his friends on team.
Quoting from Oliva’s article, “Adding the new MGL could realign the way Marines operate at the small-team level. Fire groups could become more deadly, more mobile and more independent. The concept of a dedicated grenadier might just be reborn.”
The array of grenades available to the MGL is sort of dazzling. Thermobaric weapons systems are covered quite thoroughly by the munitions manufacturers and suppliers. See more MGL info from the manufacturer at Milkor South Africa and get the full details. For technical data please see brochure for MGL Mark 1L. Great MGL systems from #randurl
