What exactly is Infrared film?
I use a Nikon FE2 film camera 35mm (shoot only back and white and develop everything at home). I realize this film is extremely sensitive. What brand of film should I purchase and is my camera suitable for this kind of film?
Thank you!
Infrared film captures light in the infrared spectrum typically beyond 680 nm (nanometre = one billionth of a metre). A print made from infrared film is a visible representation of the invisible infrared light reflections in a scene. Contrary to popular belief, infrared materials cannot ‘see’ in absolute dark, they need an infrared light source which cannot be seen with human eyes. Researchers, investigators etc. sometimes use specially made infrared flashes for this purpose.
Infrared prints show a distinct colour/tone shift. Especially the foliage of living plants and trees seem to light up because of the infrared reflective properties of the chlorophyll they contain. To properly capture infrared, most photographers use a filter for this purpose. I got some good results with green, yellow and red. You can buy dedicated, opaque infrared filters (eg. Hoya R72 or Cokin Infrared 007 – 89B) which give the strongest effect, particularly when using B&W infrared film but they tend to be a bit pricey.
Prepare for looooooong exposures and bring a tripod with you.
As far as I know, Kodak – unfortunately- discontinued their infrared films years ago, but you can still buy Ilford SFX200 (which isn’t a ‘true’ infrared film, but captures part of the infrared spectrum as well as the entire visible light range), and Efke IR 820. Since infrared materials because of their very nature are heat-sensitive, you must store them in a freezer if you want to avoid fogging and preferably shoot and process them in a single session and use a very fine grain developer, unless you’re going for a particularly grainy effect.
Since the focal point of infrared light differs from visible light, you’ll have to adjust your focus using the infrared index line on your lens barrel if you need to focus critically, for instance when using a long tele. I seems awkward to de-focus your carefully focused frame in the visible light, but that’s what infrared needs.
Alternatively, just stop down your FE2 (still an amazing cam, btw) to f.8 and up, and adjust the shutter speed accordingly. The increased depth-of-field will then include the infrared focus shift.
Infrared needs considerably more attention than a casual snapshot, but the results can be very rewarding.
