help me in this conceptual question tht base on wave and sound…..?
1)Considering the nature of the water wave describe the motion of the fishing float on the surface of the wave when wave passes beneath the float. It is really correct to say that the float bobs straight “up and down”? Explain.
2)A wire is stung tightly between two immoveable posts.discuss how an increase in temperature affect the speed of transverse wave on to this wire. Give ur resoning ignoring any changes in mars per unit length of the wire.
3)A rope of mass m is hanging down from the ceiling. Nothing is attached to loose and end of the rope. A transverse wave is traveling on the rope. As the wave travel of the rope does the speed of the wave increase, decrees or remains the same?
4)In a traveling sound wave are there any particles tht r always at rest as the wave passes by?
1. No. I assume by “water wave”, you mean the waves on the surface of a body of water, and that a fishing float can be considered a proxy for a tiny volume of water at the surface. Such waves are an example of “surface waves”, which are a combination of longitudinal and transverse waves. A particle of the medium undergoing motion in a surface wave move in an eliptical motion. 2. The wave velocity will decrease. The velocity of a traveling wave on a string or wire is proportional to the square root of the tension in the string. Most materials expand when they are heated, so the the tension in the wire will decrease when wire is heated, and this will cause the wave velocity to decrease. See second source.
3. The wave speed will decrease from the ceiling to the free end. The tension in the rope decreases from a value equal to m*g (where m is the mass of the rope, and g is the acceleration of gravity) at the point where it is fixed to the ceiling, to zero at the free end. As noted in the answer to question 2, the wave speed is proportional to the square root of the tension. As the tension decreases, so does the wave speed.
4. No. Sound waves in air are longitudinal waves. In a traveling longitudinal wave, each particle executes sinusoidal motion with time in a direction parallel to the direction of propagation of the wave. See first source. Only in a standing wave are there places where the particles of air are stationary.
